Looking Around Cordoba

From the top of the Alcazar we can see the Roman Bridge in the far right, the Alcazar below, and the Great Mosque tower in the far right.

The Roman Bridge was constructed early in the 1st century BC. For over 20 centuries it was the only bridge across the Guadalquivir River. The Tower of Calahorra at the right end of the bridge was a fortified gate, but now houses a museum.

The Roman Bridge spans 250 meters using 16 arches. It ends at the formal gate to the city, the Puerta del Puente.

Everything is beautifully illuminated at night.

Crossing the bridge we can see the Puerta del Puente in the foreground, and the decorative Torre de la Malmuerta beyond on the left.

The Puerta del Puente is a triumphal archway leading to the Great Mosque beyond.

The Great Mosque south side is brightly lit.

In daytime you can see the size of the Great Mosque from this southwest view. The mosque covers about 12 city blocks.

The Old town surrounds the Grand Mosque. Walking through it is interesting and fun.

Tourist goodies.

Lots of venues for cappchino or wine.

The tower of the Great Mosque is nearly always visible. Useful landmark in all of these winding streets.

The modern city is located about a mile north of the Old City. This commercial center looks like it was built in the early 20th century.

Lots of shopping, and some excellent restaurants in the commercial center.

Let's walk over to take a look at the Alcazar, off to the left.
